On to the next challenge! It's from trope_overdosed, which has been requested a few times. I finally got around to asking the mods, and we have permission to use their challenges.

Don't get confused by the unusual wording of the post, trope_overdosed used a lot of special "trope-ified" terms. Check out the Glossary/Bait&Switch Credits for explanations.

This challenge was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] trope_overdosed in February 2012 here. Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] _puchula_ for allowing us to use it!

CHALLENGE #19

>> Running low on inspiration? Check out our resources page!
>> If you have any questions, please post them in a reply to this post.

Beat Them At Their Own Game... )

ORIGINAL RULES - for reference only

-> You may submit as may icons for any of the themes as you like
-> Submissions are anonymous

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

Your icons must fit *one* of the three tropes mentioned above. They must either show an idealist, or the subject's head must be cut off, or the icon must have earthy (reddish-brown) coloring. I don't think the original challenge allowed for mixing the tropes, but I don't mind if you mix them and put more than one trope into one icon. Go wild!

-> yay a comm where you could submit as few or many icons as you wanted. No change here for a change! :) you may enter as many icons as you like. minimum 1 icon.
-> of course our submissions are not anonymous, as there will be no voting either.
-> submit your icons as a new entry into the community. if there are more than five, put the rest under a cut or a link to your unlocked journal post. tag your post with round number and your username (or ask me to tag it for you).
-> submit the URLs along with your icons. I'll only put the first five per person into the roundup post. Either you only list five, or I'll take the first five.
-> make an effort to leave positive feedback on other participants' posts. <3
-> read the full rules here in our userinfo.

This comm generally runs from mid-month to mid-month every month, always ending on Fridays. There is no voting. I will make a roundup post containing up to 5 icons per person after every challenge.

Deadline for round #30: Friday, September 19th 2025 your end-of-day

Since I've had so much luck with feedback from lj challenge mods last month, we can use one of them right away! \o/

This round caught my eye because I've never ever used this feature before, and I am curious what will happen! I googled for a GIMP equivalent, too. I've added instructions for that as "ETA".

This challenge was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] theskilltester in March 2010 here. Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] blueymcphluey for allowing us to use it!

Challenge Post by [livejournal.com profile] blueymcphluey

rgb

Aside from one exception, every single layer can be visible on a maximum of two of the RBG channels. I don't know how to adjust this on any other program but in photoshop if you right click on the layer and under 'blending options' tick two of these boxes then you'll be fine :D

If you need any explaining on how and why this works, feel free to ask.

Doing so will change the way a lot of your effects work, so this challenge is all about experimenting with the different effects it can achieve.

ETA: if you're using GIMP, you can achieve this by using curves on every single layer. You have to separately adjust the red, green and blue curves, and always set at least one of the curves to black, i.e. make it one flat line on the very bottom. Here's the documentation: https://docs.gimp.org/3.0/en/gimp-tool-curves.html

Since I don't have gimp, I can't verify your process, but that's not really what theskilltester is about anyway. It's about finding out new things about your software and experimenting with it in ways you haven't done before. Do that, and you're fine!

ORIGINAL RULES - for reference only

-> You may submit one entry in each medium (icon, wallpaper, layout, etc)
-> A set of textures or brushes can be considered one entry as long as it's obvious that they are a set (e.g. paint themed or sky themed)
-> Remember to enter your submission as a new post to the community and include your .psd (or alternate program equivalent).
-> Also remember to tag your entries with your username, the kind of graphic you've made and the challenge number

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

-> Remember that exactly one layer in your icon is exempt from the channels restriction. This makes it easier!
-> The original comm allowed wallpapers, texture sets, and other things in addition to icons. You are free to make those here, as well, if you like.
-> Please post your psd (or alternate program equivalent) along with each icon you make. That comm was all about learning and sharing that knowledge, and that's what we'll do too!

-> you may enter as many icons as you like. minimum 1 icon. (the maximum of one icon specified in the original rules does not apply!)

This challenge was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] theiconthrone in December 2016 here. Thank you so much to [personal profile] sietepecados for allowing us to use it!

One of the example icon links (gallicka's) was broken, so I went and found a different icon by the same maker. Luckily, almost all their other icons were still available.

Challenge Post by [livejournal.com profile] sietepecados

Amazing plot, interesting characters, beautifull people, romance, humor or maybe something else is the main reason you're a devoted fan of a fandom? In this challenge I want you to show us at least 3 different reasons why you like a fandom so much. If you want to all 10 icons can be from one show, movie, video game or animation. I know some of you likes to icon stock - so please show us on one subject (in at least 3 icons) why you like it so much, and why you like to icon it.

I finally managed to send neonspider a message, and while they sadly didn't respond, now enough time has passed that we can use a challenge from somein30! Several people have suggested somein30 before, and I loved the comm as well, so it was only a matter of time. I picked my absolute favorite round from the comm - and the one that means the most work for me, meeep. Be patient with me! <3

This challenge was originally posted to [community profile] somein30 in March 2021 here.

I had to change a few minor things related to the randomized sources, but wherever it said "my collection of" and that meant neonspider's collection, you'll now get something from my collections (of textures, songs, etc.). Wherever I used strikethrough or "ETA", those are the changes I made to the original post.

RETRO_ICONTEST RULES

I didn't list the original challenge rules, because there were no specific rules that differ from our own. Of course you have to stick to the round's themes. *g* Some of the themes - the category theme in particular - might be a little tricky. I'll try to clear up any questions you might have - if in doubt, we'll do our best to figure out what the original mod intended and try to stick to the spirit of the challenge.

You can use the provided table from the original challenge (see above textarea) but you don't have to. If you don't make all 20 icons, please mention which themes you filled.

The original challenge required exactly one icon per theme. Here, you can pick and choose and even make more than one per theme if a theme especially inspires you.

-> you may enter up to 20 icons as specified by the challenge themes. minimum 1 icon.

Important: you may only use two caps per set, and must make all the icons for that set from those two caps. You may enter more than one set, of course, and can choose different caps for each set. (Using additional caps as texture/overlay etc. is allowed, too, you don't have to post those).

tinny: Eve Baird leaning on gears: "high maintenance" - originally a Harry and Sally quote (__high_maintenance eve)
[personal profile] tinny
The poll I posted yesterday has 6 participants so far, feel free to vote if you haven't yet. One of the most-voted-for comms was [livejournal.com profile] the7days, so I went through and tried to pick a challenge from there for our next round. That comm is a treasure trove of ideas, and there were too many good ones, so I did something weird and chose two different challenge posts at once. A thematic one and a technical one which you can mix and match! I hope you like the idea.

These challenges were originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] the7days in April 2013 here and in December 2018 here . Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] naginis for allowing us to use them!

Both challenge posts by [livejournal.com profile] naginis

Icon the last 7 tv shows or movies you watched. You can mix it up with both movies and tv shows if you want.
And you don't have to icon the exact episodes you saw, as long as it's from the same show, it's good. :)
Random icons for inspiration

rebel | appleindecay | mm3butterfly | poisonfield

For this challenge, you have to showcase your subject (doesn't have to be the same one) from angles:

above
below
left
right
back
front
The 7th one is your choice :)

above, below, left

emiels | damsiedam | tturners

right, back, front

dixon | scarred_loretta | drivemytardis

ORIGINAL RULES - for reference only

» you can use any fandom you want
» you have to post seven icons fitting the theme
» your icons must be new, made specifically for this community
» your icons must fit lj standards
» you may change your icons whenever you want before the deadline

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

Consider the original challenge rules and try to stick to them in spirit. My idea for the double challenge is to mix them both: icon the last seven shows/movies, and pick a different angle for each icon. But if you only want to do one of the challenges, that's also okay.

-> you can enter more than seven icons, and thus icon more than seven shows/movies, but you can also icon the same show/movie more than once - your choice!
-> the same with the angles. you can go strict and only use each angle once... or not. :) there were only six angles in the original post, anyway. let's improvise. :)
-> you may enter as many icons as you like. minimum 1 icon.

ORIGINAL RULES - for reference only

See the 'quick summary' section under the cut above, it's all there. In case it's not clear: for each option, you have to make five icons, one for each item. E.g. for option1, the screencaps, you have to use all caps, one for each icon. For option 2, the technical themes, you have to use all themes, one for each icon. Etc.

You're not supposed to mix the options, but you can make more than one set: five for one option, five for another, five sets per week.

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

Consider the original challenge rules and try to stick to them in spirit. Our new rules are less strict, but you may find it fun to try and meet the original requirements, e.g. regarding specific fandoms or other restrictions - in this case, the 'don't mix the options' rule.

[The textures were not attributed to their makers in the original post, so I also don't know who made them. I'm sorry.]

+ you may enter as many icons as you like. minimum 1 icon.
+ if you make more than one set, you may post them as separate entries or all in one. this also means you can mix and match the options if you prefer. e.g. you can enter three icons, one for a palette color, one for a cap, one for a movie poster - or any other combination.

+ Every icon must be of a different trope. Your fandom of choice doesn't have to be listed at tvtropes, you can choose any tropes you think fit.

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

Consider the original challenge rules and try to stick to them in spirit. Our new rules are less strict, but you may find it fun to try and meet the original requirements, e.g. regarding specific fandoms or other restrictions.

+ your icons don't all have to be of the same fandom, and you may reuse tropes or characters/character groups.
+ you may enter as many icons as you like. minimum 1 icon.
+ submit your icons as a new entry into the community. if there are more than five, put the rest under a cut or a link to your unlocked journal post. tag your post with round number and your username (or ask me to tag it for you).
+ submit the URLs along with your icons. I'll only put the first five per person into the roundup post. Either you only list five, or I'll take the first five.
+ make an effort to leave positive feedback on other participants' posts. <3
+ read the full rules here in our userinfo.

This comm generally runs from mid-month to mid-month every month, always ending on Fridays. There is no voting. I will make a roundup post containing up to 5 icons per person after every challenge.

A very special community we're honoring this time: all icons are made anonymously and there is a guessing round at the end! I hope you'll enjoy it! Please check the rules, they're a little different this time.

This challenge was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] oddlyspecificon in November 2018 here. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] naginis for allowing us to use it! <3

I replaced two of the fire inspiration icons with icons made (and guessed) during that challenge, because the original post didn't have enough examples for ginger+fire. Everything else is from the original post.

Challenge Post by [livejournal.com profile] naginis

Challenge 28
There are 2 levels of difficulty, you can choose which you want to do.
I've provided some caps behind the cut you can use, but you can use your own if you wish.

LEVEL 1: GINGERS

[livejournal.com profile] gallaghers | [livejournal.com profile] theladymorgan | [livejournal.com profile] kitamikeita

LEVEL 2: GINGERS + FIRE*

[livejournal.com profile] kidcrochet [livejournal.com profile] naive_astronaut [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri
*Your subjects need to be ginger, I just couldn't find any examples of both.

Screencaps you can use )

ORIGINAL RULES - MANDATORY THIS TIME

• You can make as many icons as you want
• Comment with your icons to this post anon or under your username. I won't reveal your name anyway.
• Icons will be randomized for the compilation post, so you don't have to make different comments if you make more than one icon
• Icons must adhere to LJ standards (60kb or under, 100x100px, png/jpeg/gif)
• Please upload your icons to an anonymous icon host like imgur or squidge.org (if you don't, I will re-upload for you)

• You can mix levels: some icons that fit level 1 (ginger subjects) and some that fit level 2 (ginger + fire)
• Fake-coloring the hair of your subjects to make them ginger is allowed!

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - also mandatory

-> minimum 1 icon. (or you can just wait for the guessing week in September and guess without making any icons. :) )
-> submit your icons as a comment to this post. Comments are screened. Anonymous comments are enabled. Please do not post your icons as a new post this time!
-> you'll make it more fun for me if you submit your icons anonymously, because that means I'll be able to join in with the guessing at the end. Otherwise I won't participate in the guessing.

TACTICAL HINTS

-> fandom: as the challenge rules say, you can use your own caps, but consider that your choice of fandom can be a hint as to your identity. Using the provided caps for some of your icons will make them harder to guess.
-> style: you are absolutely allowed to try to imitate someone else's style in order to throw off the guessers
-> guessing: I'll post the guessing rules with the guessing post at the end of the four weeks. Short summary: everyone can guess, you don't have to have made icons. Guesses can also be made anonymously. You don't have to reveal which icons you've made.

This round is a five-week round. The "making" part will last for four weeks. The last week will be guessing time! The guessing post will serve as the roundup post this time.

Deadline for submitting your icons: Friday, September 13th 2024 your end-of-day

Guessing will take place from September 13th to 20th.

A round I enjoyed a lot when I took part in it back in the day. I have been waiting for our round 17 to come around so we can now play it, too!

In this case, I couldn't copy the original challenge post, because *there are a lot of them* (26 in total) ! So we're just lucky that all of those original posts still exist. Let's go on an adventure!

This challenge was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] turbo_rumble in April 2016 here.

Challenge Post by [livejournal.com profile] absolutelybatty [ special kudos to them for the complex theme! <3<3<3 ]

Finally, the themes post is finished! Sorry for the delay. I didn't realize this would take as much time/effort as it ended up taking. At any rate, you can get started below. I hope you have a lot of fun, and remember, the whole choose your own adventure story is just for fun!

Round 17 Themes )

ORIGINAL RULES - for reference only

Check out the primer [absolutelybatty] wrote for the round that hopefully covers some of the basic questions people might have.

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

As stated in the original rules, you must click your own personal path through the adventure, which will give you six themes in total. You can then make one icon per theme.

The main difference to the original turbo_rumble is that we're not actually doing a rumble (a specific kind of "last icon maker standing"). We just make some icons and enjoy the process. (And the story. :D)

-> you don't have to make all six icons. minimum 1 icon. maximum 6 icons this time.
-> please start at the beginning of the story and make the icons in order. I.e. the first theme - for everyone - is SHINE. you have to make that one, and continue from there.
-> there is no voting. (no rumble or lims rules at all, in fact)
-> submit your icons as a new entry into the community. tag your post with round number and your username (or ask me to tag it for you).
-> please state the theme for each icon in your post (since we're all going to have different themes).
-> you can put all six icons into the post this time, no need to cut-tag or link to your journal (but if you want to link anyway, you can - your journal post must be unlocked).
-> submit the URLs along with your icons. I'll put all six per person into the roundup post this time.
-> make an effort to leave positive feedback on other participants' posts. <3
-> read the full rules here in our userinfo.

This challenge will run for four weeks. There is no voting. I will make a roundup post containing up to 5 6 icons per person after every challenge. Challenges run roughly mid-month to mid-month every month.

A theme I haven't seen before anywhere else: make your icons resemble a scrapbook entry! I also picked this one because all the texture pack links are still up! Grab 'em while you can. :D Here's our round 16!

This challenge was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] createandshine in July 2012 here.

I had to replace one single inspiration icon, and used a fitting inspiration icon by the same maker instead.
Everything else is from the original post. All the texture pack links are still active exactly as they were twelve years ago.

Challenge 1: Inspirations )

ORIGINAL CHALLENGE RULES - for reference, bolded parts are mandatory!

  • All icons for this month must be inspired from the main theme (part A).
  • Icons can also include resources shared in the sub-theme (part B), as long as they also demonstrate the main theme.
  • All icons must be made new for this challenge.
  • All icons must adhere to live journal standards.
  • Please read our information & rules (see excerpt below) regarding the number of icons per post, and the number of posts that can be made per challenge.
  • If you have any questions please leave them here and a mod will reply to you as soon as possible.

Most important excerpt from the rules:

You may claim up to 2 fandoms to rewatch.
Claims can include:
  • TV or web series (eg. Gilmore Girls, Band of Brothers, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries).
  • TV seasons (eg. Supernatural Season 4, Sex & the City Season 1).
  • TV season ranges (eg. Supernatural seasons 4-8, Doctor Who seasons 2-4).
  • Film series (eg. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Avengers-Verse, The Red Curtain Trilogy).
  • Comic arcs.
  • Video Games - Franchises (where you play and icon each game - like Final Fantasy) or games that have a heavy narrative element, where each phase/world represents an episode. Official images and/or screencaps can be used to icon.

The episodes/parts of your claim should be iconed in order.
Icons should be posted directly to the community.
You can enter a challenge as many times as you want, and post as often as you like.

Guidelines for icon posts are:
  • 1-3 icons per tv episode.
  • 1-2 icons per web series episode.
  • 2-6 icons per movie.
  • 1-4 icons per comic book.
  • 1-3 icons per phase in a video game or 2-6 per game in a franchise.

A post can include as many or few icons or episodes as you like.

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

Consider the original challenge rules and try to stick to them in spirit. You must stick to the rules I bolded above.

The main point of watchnicon was that you have to pick one specific fandom (or two), and rewatch episodes/movies from it in order, from a starting point you pick, and then post icons for each one. Discussion of the rewatched material is encouraged!

-> you must enter at least one icon.
-> every icon must correspond to one of the prompts listed under Part A. You can repeat and mix and match prompts however you like.
-> If you enter more than one, you have to enter them in episode/part order. 1 icon per episode minimum (no maximum). That means you can't skip any eps!
-> There is no official claiming here - you only have to be accountable to yourself.
-> You don't have to claim whole shows, you can claim parts of them, e.g. Doctor Who season 13, or Guardian eps 20-30. You don't have to finish everything in four weeks, but you have to start at the beginning and go in order. So if you only manage Guardian eps 20-22, that's perfectly fine, and you can post what you have!
-> You are allowed to post more than once this round, e.g. if you want to watch, then icon, then watch, then icon, etc. Maximum number of posts is four (one per week).

Each challenge will run for roundabout four weeks. There is no voting. I will make a roundup post containing up to 5 icons per person after every challenge. Challenges run roughly mid-month to mid-month every month.

Are you ready for round fourteen at retro_icontest? Let this month's zodiac sign inspire you!

This challenge was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] a_mused in May 2012 here .

I had to replace several of the inspiration icons and leave out one larger texture because the links were broken. I took fitting inspiration icons from other challenge posts in the same comm. Apart from those - I hope, minor - changes, I tried to preserve the original post.

ROUND 106 THEMES click here )

TABLE:

ORIGINAL RULES - for reference only

BASIC CONCEPT: You have 20 days to make 20 icons of your characters from any media. (10 theme, 5 category, 5 artist's choice)

» You must choose one character to make 20 icons with.
» You can pick a character even if they've already been claimed or even if you picked them in the previous round.
» You can only enter once, using one character per month. (No couples. No bands, just a character sorry.)
» PLEASE try to comment on everyone's entries and leave them positive feedback.
» Icons must be made originally for this challenge, no prior work may be submitted.
» All work must be your own, not someone else's.
» Please make sure all images are PG-13(ish) RATED. Meaning no depiction of violence or either genders 'bits' visible. If you're unsure, just ask. Nothing gratuitous basically. BUT if you're not sure, just ask. :)
» Animation is allowed as long as it fits the above standards.

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

Consider the original challenge rules and try to stick to them in spirit.

You have to stick to the comm's premise, i.e. choose a fictional character and make all your icons of that same character (rule bolded above), and to the round's 20 themes.

-> submit your icons as a new entry into the community. if there are more than five, put the rest under a cut or a link to your unlocked journal post. tag your post with round number and your username (or ask me to tag it for you).

Challenge Post by [profile] poisonfield

Neon (from the Greek word meaning 'new') is a chemical element and a noble gas that is a minor component of the Earth's atmosphere, yet the 5th most common element in the universe.

Neon Information
Neon signs are electric signs lighted by long luminous gas-discharge tubes that contain neon (which naturally glows orange-red when electrified) or other gases. Neon lighting was first demonstrated in a modern form in December 1910 by Georges Claude at the Paris Motor Show. While the signage industry has declined in the past several decades, cities are now concerned with preserving and restoring their antique neon signs.

Neon signs that use an argon/mercury gas mixture emit a good deal of ultraviolet light. When this light is absorbed by a fluorescent coating, preferably inside the tube, the coating, called a "phosphor", glows with its own colour. While only a few colours were initially available to sign designers, after the Second World War phosphor materials were researched intensively for use in colour televisions. About two dozen colours were available to neon sign designers in the 1960s, and today there are nearly 100 available colours.
