It's October, and everyone's doing Halloween challenges. I picked the Haunted House challenge from theiconthrone which leaves you a lot of choice on which aspects of Halloween to focus. Enjoy!

Welcome! Welcome everyone, this time I invite you to a trip through a haunted house. Be prepared, because you'll see some horrible, thrilling things in here. This big, old house stands abandonned for over 100 years, but this doesn't mean that it's empty. What you'll hear and see here are tales and rumors heard from time to time from people who live nearby, ghost hunters that decided to spend the night in here and thrill seekers. So take your flashlight and come inside.

Since I've had so much luck with feedback from lj challenge mods last month, we can use one of them right away! \o/

This round caught my eye because I've never ever used this feature before, and I am curious what will happen! I googled for a GIMP equivalent, too. I've added instructions for that as "ETA".

Aside from one exception, every single layer can be visible on a maximum of two of the RBG channels. I don't know how to adjust this on any other program but in photoshop if you right click on the layer and under 'blending options' tick two of these boxes then you'll be fine :D

If you need any explaining on how and why this works, feel free to ask.

Doing so will change the way a lot of your effects work, so this challenge is all about experimenting with the different effects it can achieve.

ETA: if you're using GIMP, you can achieve this by using curves on every single layer. You have to separately adjust the red, green and blue curves, and always set at least one of the curves to black, i.e. make it one flat line on the very bottom. Since I don't have gimp, I can't verify your process, but that's not really what theskilltester is about anyway. It's about finding out new things about your software and experimenting with it in ways you haven't done before. Do that, and you're fine!

One of the example icon links (gallicka's) was broken, so I went and found a different icon by the same maker. Luckily, almost all their other icons were still available.

I finally managed to send neonspider a message, and while they sadly didn't respond, now enough time has passed that we can use a challenge from somein30! Several people have suggested somein30 before, and I loved the comm as well, so it was only a matter of time. I didn't list the original challenge rules, because there were no specific rules that differ from our own. Of course you have to stick to the round's themes. *g* Some of the themes - the category theme in particular - might be a little tricky. I'll try to clear up any questions you might have - if in doubt, we'll do our best to figure out what the original mod intended and try to stick to the spirit of the challenge.

The poll I posted yesterday has 6 participants so far, feel free to vote if you haven't yet. One of the most-voted-for comms was

the7days, so I went through and tried to pick a challenge from there for our next round. -> guessing: I'll post the guessing rules with the guessing post at the end of the four weeks. Short summary: everyone can guess, you don't have to have made icons. Guesses can also be made anonymously. You don't have to reveal which icons you've made.

This round is a five-week round. The "making" part will last for four weeks. The last week will be guessing time! The guessing post will serve as the roundup post this time.

A round I enjoyed a lot when I took part in it back in the day. I have been waiting for our round 17 to come around so we can now play it, too!

I had to replace several of the inspiration icons and leave out one larger texture because the links were broken. I took fitting inspiration icons from other challenge posts in the same comm. Apart from those - I hope, minor - changes, I tried to preserve the original post.
