For this challenge icons should be made from screen caps that show one of two different kinds of shots: a low angle shot or a high angle shot.

High & low angle shots are explained fully at this page https://filmustage.com/blog/camera-angles-explained/* or you can just look at the caps below.

As you can see, this isn't an icon-making technique, low angle & high angle images must be based on the angle used by the photographer, so this challenge will be a sort of scavenger hunt unless you use the provided images.

For this challenge, icons don't need to use extreme low or high angle shots, all that matters is that the image is NOT clearly an eye level shot like this one:

*In these movies many of the low & high angle shots are due to characters height differences, so they may technically be called POV shots but for this challenge we only need to think about the angle (low or high). I included many screen caps below!

Don your gear, saddle your mount, and join us in the Icon Quest!

With round nine, we are going to embark on the Icon Quest! The icon quest was a huge affair, with several comms to have quests, battles, icon posts, and discussions. The concept of the icon quest meant that all challenges were "staying open indefinitely", and we'll take that literally and try our hand at them again now!

All quests were originally posted to theiconquest by thequestmaster in 2012.

The iconquest rules explicitly state that you can do each challenge up to five times, and you can do one challenge per week. We have five weeks in our

retro_icontest round 09, so you can do five of the quests (or one of them five times, or mix and match). All the quests are listed here:

Part of

theiconquest was to do battles against other participants. If you would like to run a battle in the course of this round, there's a thread below where you can suggest themes and ask for battle partners. Then you each choose a number of screencaps, and your battle is ready to start! Feel free to expand the battle to other participants by posting it to

I will tally the points at the end of the round, making you a Hero, Bard, Wizard or Rogue. \o/ Please check the Logbook above for points - usually, icons are worth between 2 and 5 points, depending on the quest and the mode (some quests have easy and hard modes). Battle icons are worth 4 points each. The class that you made the most icons for/the icons with the most points for will be your character class in the end.

Consider the original challenge rules and try to stick to them in spirit. Each quest has its own rules, but don't be put off by the many quests and rules! Charge ahead and have fun!

♦ you may go on any quest or sidequest listed in the Logbook above.

Each week will feature a Pokemon for the main source of inspiration.

To catch the Pokemon you may icon the Pokemon itself, or use colours, type, habitat, etc. as inspiration.

At the end of each challenge, the Pokemon a trainer 'catches' will be added to the Pokemon Storage System.

It's back to school for this challenge, where you have to feature a different school subject in each icon! I've put some examples below the cut. Just to be completely clear, you need to feature 7 different subjects in your set, 1 for each icon, and they don't need to be from the selection below, but they need to be real school subjects (unfortunately, Defence Against the Dark Arts doesn't count!)

Round six has to do with six-sided dice, and there are six boxes with inspiration!

This challenge was originally posted to 20muses in February 2012 here .

I've contacted a couple more mods this month, but I still have about 150 comms left to go through (and still I haven't received any answers from LJ mods so far). All the comms we currently have permission for are listed in the masterlist here. If you used to mod an icon comm on lj (or dw) and would like to give us permission, please let me know.

02. roll the dice: I'm pretty sure everyone in their lives have played a board game, those with a dice!
This round works like those games; we have a maxi-board and 6 inspirational/technical boxes!
I'll give to each one of you 20 dice rolls and you have to "play", following the board's directions!

I'm not sure how to explain this, so I'll make an example:
first dice roll: 5 > (number5) box #6: pick a song (you have to make an icon inspired by one of the songs in the box #6; the choice is up to you)
second dice roll: 3 > (number 8) box#5: technical theme (you have to make an icon with a technical theme suggested in the box #5; the choice is up to you)
third dice roll: 2 > (number 10) box #6: pick a word (you have to make an icon inspired by one of the words in the box #6; the choice is up to you)

To make things a little more spicy we have 2 ways to play this game!

easy mode: when making your icons you have to pick only a thing (a song, a color, a theme, a word, a texture, an art) [you can't pick the same thing more than one time]
hard mode: when making your icons you have to pick two things ( 2 songs , 2 colors, 2 themes, 2 words, 2 textures, 2 arts) [you can't pick the same combination more than one time]

■ this month we'll fill a calendar, i.e. 30 days, since it's the month of June. i will not fill the calendar daily like cool_spectrum used to do, i'll only post the roundup post in calendar format this time - after the challenge has ended. if your birthday is in June, and you mention this in your post, one of your icons will be used for that day.
■ you may enter as many icons as you like. minimum 1 icon.

■ feel free to make more than 4 icons! the original limit of 4 icons per person means we'll need eight participants to fill the calendar. i'm not sure we'll have that many.

■ i'll fill up the calendar round-robin-style from all participants, and add leftover icons as alts to the end. everyone will be represented in the calendar, and if we should end up with more than 30 icons, that's not a problem! (i just hope we won't end up with less. i'm counting on you! <3)

Now for our second round! It's quite a challengenging theme, I hope you like it!

Who would you choose for the main protagonist if your favourite book was being filmed? You love a tv show, but you'd like to change the cast? Your favourite comic book hero should look like...?
Nothing more simple. In this challenge you can cast all the people you like. Create your own fancast for the roles you'd like to see on a big or small screen. If you feel inspired you can totally change their appearance to better match the role you're giving them. Change their hair color, turn them blue if you want to see them in the next part of Avatar, draw them a mask. Please let us know in your entries who will be who in your dream cast.

The challenge this week is to icon subjects that evoke a strong sense of nostalgia in you. Like shows from your childhood, your favourite actors when you were younger etc.
