Since each challenge at
pokicons was focused on a single Pokémon every week, whereas our rounds run for four weeks, I combined four of the original challenges into this post.
The four challenges below were originally posted to
pokicons by
poisonfield between February and November 2016.
If you yourself are a mod of an (old, closed) comm, and you'd like to allow us to revisit some of your challenges, let me know! I'm still going through the list and PMing mods of older comms, but I've still barely scratched the surface. All the comms we currently have permission for are listed in the masterlist here.
All challenges used in this post were originally made by
poisonfield.
The example icons provided were made by members of the comm in response to these same challenges.
ORIGINAL RULES - for reference only
Each week will feature a Pokemon for the main source of inspiration.
To catch the Pokemon you may icon the Pokemon itself, or use colours, type, habitat, etc. as inspiration.
At the end of each challenge, the Pokemon a trainer 'catches' will be added to the Pokemon Storage System.
NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory
Consider the original challenge rules and try to stick to them in spirit.
There is nothing more to the original rules than to be inspired by any part of the Pokémon. Please follow those rules bolded above.
-> you can make as many icons for each type of Pokémon as you like.
-> you don't have to make icons for each type of Pokémon. the minimum to enter this round is 1 icon total.
-> submit your icons as a new entry into the community. if there are more than five, put the rest under a cut or a link to your unlocked journal post. tag your post with round number and your username (or ask me to tag it for you).
-> submit the URLs along with your icons. I'll only put the first five per person into the roundup post. Either you only list five, or I'll take the first five.
-> make an effort to leave positive feedback on other participants' posts. <3
-> read the full rules here in our userinfo.
all the images are on squidge, and it's been a little slow/down today. I hope it stays up now. Let me know if the images don't load and I will see what I can do.
Each challenge will run for roundabout four weeks. There is no voting. I will make a roundup post containing up to 5 icons per person after every challenge. Challenges run roughly mid-month to mid-month every month.
This time, as part of the roundup, I will make a trainer card for everyone who participates! They look like this.
Deadline for round #08: Friday, November 11th 2023 your end-of-day

![]() Pikachu is a short, chubby, electric type Pokémon. There are pouches inside its cheeks where it stores electricity. It is also able to release energy through its tail, which acts as a grounding rod, as well as recharging fellow Pikachu with electric shocks. Pikachu sometimes travel in groups, and have been observed eating and sometimes destroying telephone poles, wires, and other electronic equipment. Pikachu can also electrify itself to use its signature move, Volt Tackle. When threatened, it looses electric charges from its sacs, and a group can build and cause lightning storms. It is found mostly in forests, where a sure sign that Pikachu inhabits a location is patches of burnt grass. |
![]() Lucario is a canine-like Pokémon. It has developed four small black appendages on its head, which rise when Lucario reads or manipulates aura, a special energy that it senses. Lucario can study this energy to predict the movements of their opponents and track their quarry. They also have the power to manipulate this energy in an offensive manner, in the form of explosive spheres of energy. Lucario can understand human speech, and have been reported to communicate with humans through telepathy. Lucario is considered to be prideful, and is extremely loyal to its Trainer. It also seems to have a natural sense of justice. It usually lives deep in mountains very far from people to improve their skills. It is an exceptionally rare Pokémon. |

![]() This Pokémon has a split tailfin that has been mistaken for a mermaid's in the past. Vaporeon can be found near clean, fresh lakes. It has evolved to become better suited to an aquatic lifestyle. In addition to developing gills, it has a cell composition similar to water molecules, allowing it to melt into water at will and keeping it camouflaged as it swims. |
![]() Umbreon hides in the darkness while waiting for its opponents, and its yellow rings glow when it leaps to attack. It is also capable of spraying a poisonous sweat whenever it gets agitated. This Pokémon is rare in the wild, and is more often found in urban areas under the care of people. |
