The Icon Quest

Don your gear, saddle your mount, and join us in the Icon Quest!

With round nine, we are going to embark on the Icon Quest! The icon quest was a huge affair, with several comms to have quests, battles, icon posts, and discussions. The concept of the icon quest meant that all challenges were "staying open indefinitely", and we'll take that literally and try our hand at them again now!

All quests were originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] theiconquest by [livejournal.com profile] thequestmaster in 2012.

The iconquest rules explicitly state that you can do each challenge up to five times, and you can do one challenge per week. We have five weeks in our [community profile] retro_icontest round 09, so you can do five of the quests (or one of them five times, or mix and match). All the quests are listed here:

The Icon Quest Logbook
Iconquest Logbook (List of Quests)

Part of [profile] theiconquest was to do battles against other participants. If you would like to run a battle in the course of this round, there's a thread below where you can suggest themes and ask for battle partners. Then you each choose a number of screencaps, and your battle is ready to start! Feel free to expand the battle to other participants by posting it to [community profile] iconbattles.

CURRENT BATTLES: (see comments)

CDrama Battle - 6 caps (2 participants - I'm closing it now because there's only one week left - you can still participate but not add any more caps)
Mini Color Battle - we already have our 3 caps (3 participants so far, you can still sign up!)

I will tally the points at the end of the round, making you a Hero, Bard, Wizard or Rogue. \o/ Please check the Logbook above for points - usually, icons are worth between 2 and 5 points, depending on the quest and the mode (some quests have easy and hard modes). Battle icons are worth 4 points each. The class that you made the most icons for/the icons with the most points for will be your character class in the end.

I couldn't copy all the quests and adjacent posts, but here's a copy of part of the main info/rules post, concerning icon classes and variations:

Classes
Every maker in The Icon Quest belongs in one of four classes, Hero, Wizard, Bard and Rogue.

Challenges have class-oriented themes, but you can complete any of them, not only those corresponding to your class. Completing challenges from different classes is actually what makes you get into that class, so you can pick yours by entering the respective challenges!

Each class focuses in one sort of style:

HERO:
specialize in coloring (not necessarily extremely colorful or vibrant, but rather coloring as the element that pulls it apart from the others) as the focal point of their icons. You're a Hero if Power is the attribute where you have most points. | Heroes make a statement.

WIZARD:
specialize in complexity/composition as the main feature of their icons. You're a Wizard, Harry if Magic is the attribute where you have most points. | Wizards do complex magic.

BARD:
specialize in text and emotional/inspirational aspects as huge elements of their icons. You're a Bard if Charm is the attribute where you have most points. | Bards tell a story.
( exception to the rule ) If you are working on a batch where you are aiming for 100% Bard points, at this point you may include a few icons that are textless so long as the icon tells a story through an emotional stand point. If however you are mixing and matching your batch with other classes, all your bard icons are expected to include text.

ROGUE:
specialize in simple-looking icons (crop as a main feature, negative space, not many visible textures). You're a Rogue if Agility is the attribute where you have most points. | Rogues are subtle and fatal.

The examples provided are the main/foremost elements and principles of the classes, you are at liberty to interpet them in other ways within reason (i.e. for Bards: iconning an emotional scene would not require text as it would fall under "emotional aspects").

If you need even more examples, please head to IconQuest classes: Volume II

Please be aware that even on the challenges were you can pick which class you want points in, you'll need to follow their style. i.e. if you enter a challenge and pick Magic points, your icons will need to be complex; if you enter a challenge and choose Agility points, your icons must be simpler-looking.

However, do note that many classes may overlap at which point you can decide where your points will go. You are allowed to have text on icons that you don't want towards Bard, or you may include more complex themes but still allocate the icon towards Hero because of the coloring.

2) Variations are not counted for points.

By "variations" are meant icons coming from the same base/cap, with only slight alterations in coloring and including or not text. Makers can, of course, enter different icons from the same cap, but they must start from scratch at each remake.

You can of course post your variations as well, they're still your work, but you can't ask for points due them. I only ask of you to post them below the icons designated for the challenge, and clearly label them as variations. If this Quest Master notices you're trying to pass a variation as a legit icon, you won't be given points for it and points might even be deducted, according to the "penalty" section below. (no deductions in [community profile] retro_icontest)

VARIATIONS IN WHICH YOU'D EARN POINTS FOR BOTH ICONS VARIATIONS IN WHICH YOU'D EARN POINTS FOR ONE ICON

As stated above, using the same cap twice or more is allowed, but makers must start from scratch each time. Simply editing old icons is frowned upon.

NEW RETRO_ICONTEST RULES - mandatory

Consider the original challenge rules and try to stick to them in spirit. Each quest has its own rules, but don't be put off by the many quests and rules! Charge ahead and have fun!

♦ you may go on any quest or sidequest listed in the Logbook above.
♦ ♦ if you want to do the sidequest "paths" in chapter 4, you already have to have a class. so you either have to do another quest first and thus acquire a class - or we might return to this quest in a later round
♦ ♦ you cannot do chapter 5 "weapons", because this quest require mystery bags and I haven't prepared any - we might do that in a later round
♦ you can enter up to five quests (or one of them five times, or mix and match).

♦ you can participate in as many battles as you like. go wild!

♦ if you decide to enter Chapter 6, the Melée, there will be voting in the last week, so don't leave those to the very end. if there is only one participant, there will be no voting, and one icon from this maker will get points for first place for each class.

♦ you may enter as many icons as you like. minimum 1 icon.
♦ you would make my life easier if you classified your icons into the four classes yourself. otherwise I'll just choose one for each that I deem most appropriate.
♦ submit your icons for each quest as a new entry into the community. that means you can make more than one post this round! please note which quest they're for.
♦ if there are more than five icons in a post, put the rest under a cut or a link to your unlocked journal post. tag your post with round number and your username (or ask me to tag it for you).
♦ submit the URLs along with your icons. I'll only put the first five per post into the roundup post. either you only list five, or I'll take the first five.
♦ make an effort to leave positive feedback on other participants' posts. <3
♦ read the full rules here in our userinfo.

This quest challenge will run for five weeks. There is no voting (except for the Melée). I will make a roundup post containing up to 5 icons per quest, and tally your attributes at the end.

Deadline for Melée: Friday, December 08th 2023 your end-of-day (voting will run for one week)

Deadline for round #09: Friday, December 15th 2023 your end-of-day

If you'd like to promote the comm, please do! Here's a promo code:
