Since squidge.org was down for four days this week (due to power outages in the pacific northwest), all the challenge inspiration material wasn't visible.

I'll repost the challenge post ==NEON LIGHTS== right after this reminder, so you can all see it in its intended glory. I hope you'll enjoy the challenge!

The deadline for this round is February 16.

Welcome to round 11 at retro_icontest! This challenge is all about coloring, while not being a color challenge! I hope you find it fun and inspiring!

This challenge was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] paintedpixels in August 2016 here.

If you yourself are a mod of an (old, closed) comm, and you'd like to allow us to revisit some of your challenges, let me know! I'm currently in the process of PMing mods of older comms, but it'll take a while. All the comms we currently have permission for are listed in the masterlist here.

Neon (from the Greek word meaning 'new') is a chemical element and a noble gas that is a minor component of the Earth's atmosphere, yet the 5th most common element in the universe.

Neon Information
Neon signs are electric signs lighted by long luminous gas-discharge tubes that contain neon (which naturally glows orange-red when electrified) or other gases. Neon lighting was first demonstrated in a modern form in December 1910 by Georges Claude at the Paris Motor Show. While the signage industry has declined in the past several decades, cities are now concerned with preserving and restoring their antique neon signs.

Neon signs that use an argon/mercury gas mixture emit a good deal of ultraviolet light. When this light is absorbed by a fluorescent coating, preferably inside the tube, the coating, called a "phosphor", glows with its own colour. While only a few colours were initially available to sign designers, after the Second World War phosphor materials were researched intensively for use in colour televisions. About two dozen colours were available to neon sign designers in the 1960s, and today there are nearly 100 available colours.
